In my previous article – 5 ways to generate leads that really do work – I mentioned the lead magnet and how it can effectively entice customers into your sales funnel. In this article I will tell you what a lead magnet is – if you don’t already know – and I will give you some ideas on how you can use a lead magnet to help you generate leads for your business.

Defining the lead magnet

It is exactly what it says it is: An incentive (the magnet) that marketers use to attract leads. However, for a lead magnet to work successfully, it must offer a trade off – offer potential customers something – often for free – that will be useful to them in exchange for their contact details. Usually, lead magnets offer downloadable digital content like eBooks, PDF checklists, video tips, etc

They are one of the most effective ways to get more email subscribers. And when you have a growing list of email subscribers you are well on your way to generating leads for your business.

Ideas that make great lead magnets

I have successfully used some of the examples below for my coaching business. Only offer lead magnets that will work for you and that you are able to follow through with. For example, don’t offer freebies that end up eating away at your profits. Be smart and give away content that you are able to repurpose or information that will benefit the customer and make you look good but still have them wanting more of what your business can offer them.

Do a professional job of designing your lead magnets and remember to brand them with your logo and contact details. Also, as I mentioned above, don’t forget that your lead magnet can only be downloaded for free once the user has filled out their contact details.

Here are 3 ideas that work:

  1. eBooks – Write these as short, simple, quick reads offering useful tips and information but just enough to help the customer do what you do on a superficial level. You want them to try and succeed but end up contacting you to do the bigger job. For example, if you are a builder, you could supply an eBook of DIY household hacks but remind them of your bigger building services.
  2. Video tutorials – This is quite a lot like the eBook but what’s great about the video is busy people will often find the time in their day to download and watch 5 to 10 minutes during their coffee break. Again, give them something useful (even mind blowing if you can) in the video that they can practice in real life but not enough that they don’t need your product or service to change their lives.
  3. Day-to-day organisers – These can be in the form of a calendar, diary, useful spreadsheets, checklists, etc. They must be cleverly planned so they do what they are meant to do successfully. You want them to help people with their busy days.
